
Harrison Cook
Teaching Artist
Harrison Cook is a writer, magazinist, theater maker, potter, and sculptor living in the Midwest.
In 2014, he graduated from the University of Iowa, majoring in English and Creative Writing, received Minor(s) in Theatre Arts (playwriting), Sociology and a certificate in Literary Publishing focusing on book and magazine design.
As an undergraduate, he held several positions within the campus’ literary cominirt including Editor-in-Chief of earthwords: the undergraduate literary review and as an editorial intern at The Iowa Review.
After graduation, he’s worked in communications, journalism, and marketing fields, but his passion still lies with the literary community and visual arts. He’s served as the Creative Nonfiction Editor at Guesthouse and a Contributing Writer at PlastikComb, Hi-Fructose, and His work has appeared in Gay Mag, Foglifter Journal, Essay Daily, TriQuarterly Review, and elsewhere. His piece “Atlas,” was recognized as a notable essay in Best American Essays 2021.
While in school, his play “ECHO” was produced by the University of Iowa. His LGBTQ+ monologues have been anthologized by Some Scripts magazine. In 2021, he was a mentee in the Founder’s Project where he wrote and performed his one person show “Learning to Walk Again.”
If being a writer wasn’t hard enough, he’s ventured into the realm of ceramic art and his hand build and thrown pieces of pottery put the FUN in functional ceramics and embraces unconventionality in his works of sculpture. He’s the potter behind Gay Made Pottery. His work has been shown in BFF group shows, at Art Plug, and most recently in Art In the Blue Spring Exhibition.
He is a teaching artist for Why Arts and The Joslyn Art Museum studio programs and loves every minute of it 🌈
